THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION SHOULD PROPOSE TO EXTEND THE CO2 EMISSIONS TRADING SCHEME TO ROAD TRANSPORT

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is expected to propose on Wednesday, in her State of the Union address, to extend the CO2 emissions trading system to the whole construction sector and especially to road transport.

Today the carbon exchange applies to around 12 000 industrial installations (electricity production, steel, cement and chemicals) and covers less than half of the EU's greenhouse gas emissions. With the new scheme, it could therefore include pollution from cars and lorries.

"In road transport, emissions trading has the advantage of capturing emissions from the fleet while encouraging a change in behaviour with lasting effects on mobility solutions," says the Commission's internal document, consulted by Les Echos.
